The Problem of the Storyline

This was a problem we encountered when trying to make sure we have balance within our music video as we have the lip singer and the girlfriend character which have effectively created two different storylines.

However, to recifiy this dilema, we have decided that to make the narrative clear and create a sense of balance within the video we will have the lip syncer and the girlfriend character merging into each other. This will bring both storylines together and show that both the girlfriend and the lipsyncer are effectivley the same character. This idea is similar to that used at the music video to Read All About It by Professor Green and Emeli Sande (see below)

The Editing Process of Music Video

These collective shots show the editing process using iMovie to create our groups music video. With some scenes we have changed the colour of the shots using this software to create the affect of time changing.

Filming in London: Take Two

Since our video camera lost battery whilst filming in London on our first filming day we were not able to film establishing location shots of iconic places in London, such as St Paul's or Tower Bridge

So, for a day I went to London to film panning shots of these iconic places so that we can use them within our music video to establish where we were filming.

Filming in London

During the filming day unfortunatley our camera ran out of battery.

This is a location that we used for some scenes at the back of the OXO building.

Planning: Costume

These images refer to the different costumes that we have decided will be used within the music video. We have also decided due to the different number of scenes that these characters are in that the boyfriend and the single girl will have three changes of costume and the girlfriend and the single girl will have two costume changes.

Planning: Makeup

I created this from here: http://www.picture2life.com/Pictures/Open/22793763/Sizes

As our music video will be in the pop genre we will follow the conventions of this to make sure that our target audience knows that this is the genre. Each of the pop music artists above have created their look and have used makeup to establish this, there are also key articles in magazines such as 'Just Pop' that describe exactly how to wear makeup exactly like a key music artist.

With this convention of pop music artists in mind we have decided, as a group, that the female characters within our music video will be fully made up and look just like the artists above.

Planning Filming: The Thames

As we are planning to use the Southbank beach as a location for some scenes in our music video I have looked up the times that the beach will be accessible and able to be filmed on.

Planning Filming: Health and Saftey

As we are filming in London using a variety of different locations we need to plan for health and safety.

The main location that presents most problems is South Bank beach. This is because it has lots of stones which are wet and could cause a tripping hazard so we need to bring footwear that is able to grip and prevent this. We also need to take into consideration the time in which we use this location because of tides. Therefore, we need to carefully plan this to make sure that we are able to use the location carefully.

Planning Filming: Casting

For our music video we have four main characters that are used within the narrative these are:
  • The Single Girl
  • The Singer
  • The Boyfriend
  • The Girlfriend
As a group we decided that we will play the main roles within the video with each of us taking turns in filming. However we needed to find a suitable person to play the boyfriend who would be willing to participate.

We decided that Francesca will play the role of the single girl, the singer will be played by Hannah, Jack will be the boyfriend and I will be the girlfriend.

Basic Narrative of Our Music Video

This is a basic representation of the narrative that we will be following within our music video for the song Torn by Natalie Imbruglia.

Word Association with Pop Music

This was created using http://worditout.com/
These are common words that are associated with Pop Music and their videos. I have looked into commonly associated words in order to plan and create products that emulate these ideas.

Working on Shot Lists

We have finished story boarding the shots and the seconds that they will take up. We feel as a group that this follows a clear narrative and story which are in most other Pop music videos, such as Call Me Maybe. We have also decided to revolve this story around the idea of unrequited love; this idea of heart break can be seen in most Pop music videos and it was an idea we were keen to explore as a group.

National Portrait Gallery: Filming?

This is a screen shot from the website of the National Portrait Gallery

After further research into the National Portrait Gallery as a possible filming location I have discovered that in their 'Terms and Conditions' section they do not accept filming or cameras to be used in the gallery, therefore we cannot consider this gallery as a suitable location for filming.

Possible Locations in London for Filming

This is a Prezi looking at the different possible filming locations in London for our music video.

Our Choice to Shoot in London

We decided to use London as a location for the setting of our Pop music video showing different popular tourist locations within this. We decided this as it is athsetically pleasing for the audience, as well as being used frequently within musics in the Pop music genre including Sugar Babes About You Now, Coldplay's Fix You and most recently and prominently in One Direction's One Thing.

Working On Our Story Board

This shows us working on our story board and shot lists for our music video.

What We Have Decided So Far

  • We have created a narrative for the music video: there will be a main girl, boy and a girl friend used within this.
  • We have decided that there will be a main singer, however she will be singing about another persons' story.
  • We have decided that the location of most of our shots will be in London.
  • We have also decided that we will have the main singer in a landscape singing whereas most of the action narrative will be filmed in different locations.

    Audience Profile

To create a profile of our audience I have decided to generate a simulation of the type of person that we would be targeting in our music video.

I have created the character of Rebecca Chapman and what her life would consist of through using social media as this is a growing tool used by many people in our target audience and as we are using different platforms such as a music video, digipak and website design these should appeal to those using social media.

This link below will go to Rebecca Chapman's 'Fakebook' profile:

The pictures below are created from the website http://simitator.com/

These examples of social media show that our audience must have a love of Pop music and also would have an experience of heartbreak because this is included in our narrative of our music video.

We will try and target this audience within our music video through the conventions of the genre including the use of; popular locations, current fashion and the narrative of the piece.

    Letter of Permission

As we will be using a pre-existing song to use for my music video we need to ask permission to use the song from the record company that released the single Torn by Natalie Imbruglia which is RCA studios. I am doing this to ensure that there will be no copyright issues with the song as they know that we will be using it.

Our Song Choice: Torn by Natalie Imbruglia

We have chosen to use the song Torn by Natalie Imbruglia for our final video.

Reasons why we have Chosen this Song:

    • The song has the potential for a clear narrative path for a music video.
    • This song is well known by all members of the group and liked as a choice.
    • The song has a female artist in it, which fits the group we are in.
    • This song is from the pop music genre which we agreed we all wanted to follow.
    • It was in the charts more than ten years ago. This means that we will not be tempted to copy any of the music video that already exists.
    • This song also has the right tempo to lip sync well together with a video.

Read All About It: My Music Video Evaluation

What elements enable you to recognise the genre?

The genre of this music video is rap, but also a fusion with Pop music. This genre is established through the different settings in which the artists of the song are seen such as an empty warehouse and in large open spaces. However the main scenes with the child and the family scenes are seen as more important to focus on as there are many varied changes of scenes in this.

Why is it important from a distributor’s point-of-view that the video highlights the genre of the music?

It is important from a distributor’s point-of-view that the video highlights the genre of the music as it has to be seen clearly for an audience to be able to understand the context of the song and the reason why these creative choices have been used within the video.

How is the artist/band used in the video?

The artists Emeli Sande and Professor Green are seen in different shots from each other singing with their own emotions and takes on the song. Professor Green is seen as the older version of the child in the other scenes within this video, however this is only revealed at the end.

    How many locations are used?

There are many different locations used the two artists can be seen in different places such as an empty warehouse, an empty concrete field and different locations in each. The narrative of the video has different locations set around a house setting which these scenes show: two bedrooms, the living room and the patio looking inside the house from the outside.

What will we use in the music video?

We have decided that  our main singer will be in different locations lip syncing and a separate story will follow off from this without any lip syncing. This will be effective as it places emphasis on the narrative of the story, but also shows the lip syncer in the main so that there is a balance created and follows the emotions of the singer. This music video shows that this choice of doing our music video can work and look effective.

    Troublemaker: My Music Video Evaluation

The woman in Olly Murs’ Music Video is portrayed as  a ‘Troublemaker’, especially in a pivotal moment in the video 0.28. The ‘troublemaker’ gets slapped by a customer, which is seen to be an everyday life situation. As a reaction to this the woman pours water on him. It is not the assault that the people react to in the video, but the retaliation and narratively she is seen as causing ‘trouble’ for the sake of it.  Her actions against the customer result in her employer dismissing her from her job which the woman is seen as hurt and anguished at. The only positive side is the main singer, Olly seems shocked at both the mans behaviour and the woman's.

Within this evaluation I have looked at the representation of women within the music video to Olly Murs' Troublemaker.

I have looked at this due to the fact that we will be looking at representing women within our music video as we are a female group and will be starring within the video.

Love Me Again: My Music Video Evaluation

What elements enable you to recognise the genre?

The genre of this music video is established through the setting and the basic narrative. The setting is within a disco type senario and then there are two main characters; male and female. They seem to fall in love and then run away. The casting of the main characters also links with a Pop music genre as they are seen as young and wishing to have fun, which would be mirrored in their target audience.

Why is it important from a distributors point-of-view that the video highlights the genre of the music?

It is important for a distributor to show the genre of the music so that it targets the audience that they are wishing to aim for.

How is the artist/band used in the video?

The artist is the main act on the stage and sings whilst the action of the two main characters is seen in contrasting shots such as running across the streets and in different places within the club.

    How many locations are used?

There is one location mainly used throughout the whole music video for the main singer (John Newman) however the 'main couple' are seen in different shots within the club and within the last couple of shots the main male and female characters are seen outside the club and running through the streets.

How does the film's media language appeal to its target audience?

The films media language appeals to the target audience

Call Me Maybe: Group Music Video Evaluation

This is a mind map of our group evaluation of Carly Rae Jepson's Call Me Maybe.

What We Can Use In Our Final Product
    • I think we can use the clear story line that this uses.
    • I also think that we could use a band part as part of our music video.
    • We can also use the fast cuts.
    • We can use lots of different locations when filming.

Planning Process: What Type of Song?

I contributed all the notes that are written in purple.

This is a photo of the mind mapping session we produced as a group. We were discussing the different songs, genres and artists that we could choose as a group for our final products.

    Criteria we have Chosen:

We want there to be a clear narrative to the song, as well as being quite upbeat, we also wanted to use a Pop song that was ten years old or older.

Evaluation of Our Practise Music Video

This is our evaluation of our practise music video. We chose to do this evaluation as a group discussion so that we can have all our ideas shown and critically analyse what we have produced. We also decided to use a 'shot-in-shot' technique, in the editing process, to create this video and this is the result.

Through making this evaluation it has helped us get an idea of what we can do and what skills we can bring from making both the music video and the evaluation into our final products.

    Practise Music Video

This is our practice music video. From this task we have learnt how to use the new digital cameras and also learnt how to use the latest version of iMovie on the Mac Book. Producing this video also enabled us to learn about other varied editing techniques such as adding credits, animations, creating a rewind effect, making some clips appear in black and white and creating a fade to white and fade to black for transitions between cuts to create the video.

This practise music video will be very beneficial when we create our final product.

    Lip Syncing Practise

This video was created in the process of learning how to edit clips. This was a practise video and helped us to learn how to use the iMovie software, especially learning how to lip sync a video to music. The creation of this also helped us to understand how to edit a piece of film such as adding credits and the introductory texts used at the beginning of this video.

    The Brief

This is the brief that we have been asked to follow in the creation for our music video.
